The aim of Teaching and Learning at BCA is to implement the 6 Principles of the Curriculum through a 5‑Part Lesson that is inclusive by design, ensuring all pupils know more, remember more and can do more. Teachers make evidence‑informed pedagogical choices that adapt teaching to meet pupil needs and maximise access for every learner.
Teachers at BCA use responsive strategies throughout the lesson to ensure pupils remain secure in new learning. Pupil practice is essential for applying new knowledge and beginning the transfer to long‑term memory. Through Guided Practice, teachers use models, examples and structured scaffolds so all pupils can access tasks and maximise their performance. This ensures practice is purposeful, inclusive and aligned with curriculum intent.
Pupil progress is assessed regularly using a range of strategies, and feedback is shared with pupils in multiple formats to support ongoing improvement and sustained learning.
CPD
CPD plays a central role in developing high‑quality Teaching and Learning at BCA. Each week, we dedicate one hour on Friday mornings to high‑quality professional learning that addresses academy priorities and individual teacher development.
For 2025–26, the CPD offer is structured around two core priorities:
- Inclusion — Ensuring every pupil can access, engage with and succeed in the curriculum. CPD focuses on strengthening inclusive classroom routines, adaptive teaching, and the use of high‑impact scaffolds that support all learners. Sessions develop staff expertise in designing lessons that are inclusive by design and responsive in delivery.
- Guided to Independent Practice — Supporting pupils to move from supported practice to confident, independent application. CPD develops teacher skill in modelling, structuring practice, gradually releasing responsibility, and designing tasks that build independence. This priority aligns directly with the Inclusive 5‑Part Lesson, ensuring pupils know more, remember more and can do more over time.
- Checking Understanding for All– Developing teacher expertise in accurately and regularly checking pupil understanding so misconceptions are identified early and addressed effectively. CPD explores questioning, live assessment, mini‑whiteboard routines, and strategies that ensure every pupil is seen, heard and known in the learning process. This priority reinforces the Inclusive 5‑Part Lesson and strengthens teachers’ ability to make informed, adaptive decisions.
